1599-1641. Flemish painter. Born in Antwerp,
van Dyck was an assistant to Rubens 1618-20,
then briefly worked in England at the court
of James I, and moved to Italy in 1622. In
1626 he returned to Antwerp, where he
continued to paint religious works and
portraits. From 1632 he lived in England and
produced numerous portraits of royalty and
aristocrats, such as Charles I on Horseback
about 1638 (National Gallery, London).
